About the event
Beethoven and Rachmaninoff
Two different pianos and sounds
Opus 22 is subtle monument in the output of Beethoven, who saw seven iterations of the piano in his lifetime. It is a sonata that simultaneously completes an era and introduces a break from common practice.
Rachmaninoff, living most of his life in the United States, was considered a bridge between an age past and the contemporary. He was a “Steinway Artist,” meaning he had a relationship with and preferred the piano making company. American jazz infiltrated his sound and his creativity was boundless, in part, because his piano was the same piano we recognize today.
